Biography
Richard Edward Caplan, MD is a general surgeon with Houston Methodist Department of Surgery who specializes in a wide spectrum of general surgery, including endocrine surgery, surgical oncology, hernia and complex abdominal wall problems, laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He started practicing in 1985 in the Texas Medical Center, where he has spent his entire career, with over two decades at Houston Methodist Hospital. He is an effective, caring communicator who works in a collaborative style to make his patients feel comfortable with their surgical experience.
Dr. Caplan is the recipient of six teaching awards, including two Golden Apple Awards for faculty teaching, and served as the 2010-11 president of the Houston Surgical Society.
As an advocate for surgical education and global health, he focuses on his interest in capacity building in global surgery. He is involved in the first American College of Surgeons pilot to improve the training of surgeons in Ethiopia. He has also made seven mission trips to Haiti and has worked with Faith in Practice in Guatemala.
He currently serves on the Houston Global Heath Collaborative board, a group that supports collaboration, education and research among the member institutions of the Texas Medical Center.
